By using qualitative X-ray phase analysis, X-ray spectral microanalysis, and microstructural analysis, we studied the evolution of the phase composition of surface layers of VT1-0 titanium alloy in the process of carburization from graphite in an argon atmosphere under 100 kPa pressure in the temperature range 750-1100 deg C for 5 h. We established that the amount of titanium oxides in the surface layers decreases (up to complete disappearance) and the formation of car-bides becomes more intense as the saturation temperature increases and the partial pressure of oxygen in the saturating environment decreases.
