John Kaloski left U.S. Steel for rival National Steel less than two years after receiving the Plant Manager of the Year Award in 1996. Kaloski received the honor for his work as general manager at U.S. Steel's Mon Valley (Pa.) Works; he was named to the same post at Gary (Ind.) Works later in 1996.Kaloski left U.S. Steel because he'd worked there for 30 years and was looking for executive responsibility. U.S. Steel was "chock full," he says, so he joined National as senior vice president, regional operations. Kaloski was charged with merging the company's plants in Ecorse, Mich., and Portage, Ind., into one regional division. This improved customer service, quality, and delivery as well as cutting costs.
