Ergonomics standard repealed

On March 6-7, Congress repealed an OSHA ergonomics standard that was enacted on Jan 16th in the final days of the Clinton administration. Steel-makers and other industries believed the standard was too burdensome. Before the vote, President Bush indicated that he would sign the bill; he did so on March 20th.Congress used the Congressional Review Act to repeal the standard; the act allows the House and Senate to pass a "joint resolution of disapproval" to remove the legal force of any recently enacted regulation. The House passed the bill 223-206; the Senate, 56-44. This was the first time Congress has used the act.
