Scrap companies form venture to briquette mills' by-products

The joint venture will set up recycling facilities at steel mills and briquette the mills' waste on-site. It then will sell the recycled product back to the company. The joint venture's recycled products will be called Krystalrock. The binder can be used to briquette a variety of waste materials, including sludge, BOF scrubber, coke breeze, flue dust, hot-mill cake, and roll scale, says Jim Griffiths, Krystal Bond's president. The joint venture's recycling costs will be similar to those of other current waste recyclers, he says. "The recycling that is going on right now costs 30-40 dollars per ton, and you are going to be in that range [with us]."
