Aluminum makers have had strip casting in minimills for decades, and the "micromill" is around the corner. Alcan introduced commercial strip casting of aluminum: today, sev-eral major aluminum makers use it to produce painted sheet and other products that don't require prime surface quality. Barmet Aluminum and Vulcan Aluminum have operated strip casters from Hazelett since 1986. The casters produce strip that is 1,320 mm (53 inches) wide. Except for an Alussuise caster in Germany that no longer operates, these produced the world's widest strip-cast aluminum un-til Golden Aluminum installed a Davy caster. That caster can produce sheet 1,750 mm (70 inches) wide.
