Unlike other nonunion minimill companies, who keep quiet on the issue, "we fight unionism vigorously, openly," says Marvin Selig. "We're not buying what they're selling." Labor unions have mounted several major but unsuccessful drives to organize the workforces at SMI-Texas and SMI-Alabama. The employee hand-book of SMI-Texas spells out the company's position:"SMI-Texas has no labor union. We work together as one team to reach our goals and to solve our problems. This permits you to work directly with your supervisor without having to call in a third party to represent or speak for you.
