From Huta im. Lenina to Huta im. Tadeusza Sendzimira

In 1949, the communist government of Poland built a new steel mill in a suburb of Krakow: Huta im. Lenina (Lenin Works) in Nowa Huta. The communists intended this new town to be a model of democratic socialism. Since the communist dictatorship of the proletariat recognized no higher power and no religion, Nowa Huta was established with no churches. By 1980 Huta im. Lenina had 40,000 employees who not only produced steel (6.5 million tons in 1979) but also worked in mines, refractory shops, hotels, food preparation, and laundries for the huge enterprise.
