CHARACTERISATION OF SUNFLOWER GENOTYPES FOR YIELD AND CONFECTIONERY CHARACTERISTICS

A preliminary investigation involving three females were taken up during 1997 kharif at University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad, to assess breeding potentiality of oil type sunflower for confectionery characteristics, viz., high protein content,low oil content, high test weight, high volume weight, high hull content. Surya, an open pollinated variety was used as check. The combining ability for seed yield and ancillary characters were also studied in a Line X Tester design. The results revealedthat the gene action was predominantly additive for days to 50% flowering and volume weight while, it was non-additive for seed yield, head diameter, 100 seed weight, oil content, protein content, hull content and self fertility. The inbred X-13 was a good general combiner far seed yield, Oil content, head diameter and volume weight. The female 8S2A X DSF-2 was a good general combiner for seed yield. None of the hybrids combined all the desirable characteristics. However, the hybrid CMS 234A X M-2-1 was the best specific combiner for seed yield and oil content, With respect to confectionery characteristics, the crosses (852A X DSF-2) X M-2-1 and CMS 234A X IV-55 were close to check in their mean performance and no hybrid neither exhibited high sea effects nor was superior to check for all traits. Based on the results derived, inclusion of typical confectionery type (Non-oil type) genotypes in large number was suggested to identify hybrid combinations superior in confectionery characteristics.
