Long before boatshops were heated, boatbuilders, especially in New England and the Pacific Northwest, built rugged, durable wooden boats that were also pleasing to look at. And they built them quickly -five or six months for a 132-foot schooner, and that's without any sort of shelter. But whether the boat was big or small, it took - and still does - a particular type of person to see the plan through, from conceptualizing the boat to the launch and outfitting. Here are four such boatbuilders, and although they are gone now, they are still part of local lore in their communities.
