摘要

When Chris Bonzek, a leseaichei at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, dragged a tiawl net through the waters of Chesapeake Bay in July 2003 to assess the abundance of marine life, there was a vast section of the upper bay where the net continua lly came up empty. Here, the only fish Bonzek saw were those caught while the net was on its way down to or up from the bottom. Otherwise, it caught no fish whatsoever further than 20 feet below the surface. In productive parts of the bay, the survey's 2 0-minute tow might yield up to 2,000 fish. Not, however, in the dead zone.
