The US Department of Energy has changed its mind yet again about FutureGen, switching the focus from coal gasification to testing a cleaner coal-burning technology. But like the original plan, the new project will include carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) as a key component. The news was a particular blow to the city of Mattoon, Illinois, which was to be the site of the next-generation coal-fired project, which has had such a precarious history that pundits have taken to calling it NeverGen.
