Plans for FutureGen, a lengthy effort to build a near zeroemissions coal-fired power plant in Illinois, were sidestepped with today's announcement of 1bn dollars in Recovery Act funding to instead retrofit an existing facility. US Energy Secretary Steven Chu and Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Illinois) today announced funding for FutureGen 2.0, which will retrofit Ameren's 200MW Unit 4 in Meredosia, Illinois, with advanced oxy-combustion technology. A pipeline will take more than 1mn short tons/yr (900,000 metric tonnes/yr) of captured CO2 to Mattoon, Illinois, for storage.
