A December accident at a coal-fired plant in Tennessee has become the equivalent of the nuclear generation industry's Three Mile Island. In the wake of the Dec. 22 collapse of the coal fly ash impoundment site at Tennessee Valley Authority's Kingston Fossil Plant - which flooded surrounding residences with more than a billion gallons of coal sludge as much as six feet deep - the federal government is taking a look at regulating the disposal of coal combustion waste (CCW) (NGWJan.12,p8).
