Low Gas Prices, EPA Regs Doom Texas Coal Plant

Developers of the White Stallion Energy Center are abandoning plans to build the $2.5 billion, 1,200-MW coal-fired power plant in Matagorda County, about 90 miles southwest of Houston. The plant could have provided enough electricity to power to 600,000 average homes. The company said low natural gas prices and tightening environmental regulations were behind the decision to jettison the project, but the lure of cheap gas appeared the chief motivator.
