While the Japanese ramp up spending in their campaign to commercializing methane hydrates by 2023, US Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said she sees no immediate threat to LNG export terminals being planned and built in the US. Murkowski, head of the powerful Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, told Natural Gas Week that methane hydrates are important as a future energy source—with an estimated 30% of the world's hydrates offshore and under Alaska's northern coast.
