Cuba Nixes Offshore Drilling to Focus on Onshore E&P, Renewables

After several deepwater attempts to drill off their coast failed, Cuban officials are shifting focus to increasing produc-tion of onshore wells and adding more renewable power. In 2012, three deepwater wells were drilled by Spanish, Norwegian, Indian, Malaysian, Russian and Venezuelan companies and all three came up dry (NGW Nov.5'12). Only Norway's Statoil and Venezuela's PDVSA have not abandoned then-leases, but both have said no future drilling is planned.
