Index: Texas NatGas Production Drops 10%, Crude Output Surging

Natural gas production in Texas during January dropped 10.5% compared with year-ago figures. That was one of the findings of the monthly Texas Petro Index — an economic snapshot of the Lone Star State's energy industry. Decade-low prices have many producers turning away from dry-gas production the state in search of more liquids-rich plays. The index estimated Texas natural gas output in January at more than 571.3 billion cubic feet, a year-over-year monthly decline of about 10.5%. With natural gas prices in January trailing prices in January 2011 by about 24.2%, the value of Texas-produced gas declined 32.1% to about $1.74 billion.
