EnCana's Advancing Technology Has Gas Production Ramifications

As Calgary-based EnCana prepares to split into two pure-play energy companies in 2009, it's clear that the company has grabbed huge acreage positions in virtually all of the most coveted emerging shale plays in North America. Yet, the relative success of those plays, and all of its other unconventional operations, will depend in large part on its ability to capitalize on the latest technological advancements in horizontal drilling, as well as on various new fracturing techniques, the company's management said at its annual investor day earlier this month (NGW May19,p12).
