Final recommendations released by the president's oil spill commission last week revived the conviction of many US policymakers who feel that far-reaching policy reforms may be needed to prevent an unexpected disaster like the BP Macondo oil spill. On the surface, many of the commission's proposals could spill over and augment the financial and regulatory challenges of offshore gas exploration, including the development of shallow water prospects as well as associated gas deposits in deepwater portions of the Gulf of Mexico.
