Hydrogen-powered, fuel-cell vehicles are no longer a lofty, futuristic idea. Three auto makers — Honda, Toyota and Hyundai — will begin large-scale marketing of their hydrogen models in the US later this year and in 2015, especially in California. If they catch on with consumers, these fuel-cell cars stand to create another challenge for King Oil in the transportation fuels market — along with hybrid-electrics, electric vehicles and vehicles running on compressed natural gas.
