Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, in only her second week on the job, signaled last week that new rules governing federal regulation of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) are imminent. In a web chat commemorating Earth Day, she said the rules would be released “fairly soon.” Jewell, who began her career with ExxonMobil Corp. predecessor Mobil, said she has performed the fracking procedures “very safely on wells that I worked on in Oklahoma.” She acknowledged that she may be the first secretary of Interior to ever frack a well.
