Norway’s Statoil has inched a little closer to at long last regaining a role offshore Kazakhstan after signing a heads of agreement with state Kazmunaigas (KMG) to thrash out terms of cooperation on the Abai Block in the Caspian Sea. Statoil will help with the construction of a jack-up drilling rig that will be used to develop the block, under the terms of the latest accord signed last month. “We are interested in cooperation with Statoil, in attracting and using their experience and technologies in operating international offshore oil and gas projects,” said KMG boss Kairgeldy Kabyldin, adding that the two companies had a “strategic partnership” for joint activities in the Caspian Sea.
