Screening of Herbicides for Weed Control in French Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 1993 at Main Research Station, University of Agricultural Sciences, Hebbal, Bangalore to screen the herbicides for weed control in French bean The evaluated results revealed that out of the herbicidal treatments, alachlor at 1 2.5 kg ha~(-1) was found to be highly effective and economical to control the weeds and to produce higher seed yield (1205 kg ha~(-1)) and there by recorded maximum gross returns (Rs. 15,665 ha~(-1)), net returns (Rs 6,685ha~(-1)), marginal returns (Rs. 7,436 ha~(-1)) and profit per rupee invested (Rs. 0.74). This was closely followed by metolachlor at 1.25 kg ha~(-1) in french bean. The other herbicidal treatments registered moderate seed yields as compared to control.
