Water requirement and yield of drum seeded rice-rice cropping system.

Field experiments was conducted during kharif, 2001 and summer, 2002 on red clay loam soil at Agricultural Research Station, Kathalagere, Davangere district coming under Southern transition zone of Kamataka and irrigated by Bhadra reservoir. The study consisted of 6 treatments viz., Irrigation 2 days after subsidence of ponded water (DASPW), 3 DASPW, 4 DASPW, maintaining saturation from 25 days after sowing (DAS) to physiological maturity (PM), maintaining 2.5 cm from 25 DAS to 40 DAS and 5 cm from 41 DAS to PM. These treatments were compared with transplanted rice with recommended package of practices for water management (maintaining 2.5 cm up to 10 days after transplanting (DAT) and 5 cm from 11 DAT to PM). Maintaining saturation from 25 D AS to PM recorded higher pooled grain and straw yield (6688 and 9546 kg/ha, respectively) followed by maintaining 2.5 cm from 25 DAS to 40 DAS and 5 em from 41 DAS to PM (6645 and 9086 kg/ha, respectively). Irrigation 3 and 4 DASPW recorded lower pooled grain and straw yield (5571 & 7292 and 5246 & 6265 kg/ha, respectively). Irrigation 4 DASPW recorded higher water use efficiency (50.05 and 37.67 kg/ha-cm in Kharif and summer, respectively) as compared to rest of the treatments (26.86 to 48.51 and 24.55 to 36.60 kg/ha-cm in kharif and summer, respectively).
