Economic Performance of Sugarcane Growers in Cauvery, Tunga and GhataprabhaAreas of Karnataka

The persent study was conducted in of Cauvery, Tunga and Ghataprabha command areas of Karnataka during 2009 to examine the economic performance of sugarcane growers. The total sample size for the study constituted 180 respondents (60 sugarcane farmerseach from Cauvery, Tunga and Ghataprabha (Belgaum district) command areas. The results revealed that a majority of sugarcane farmers were in medium level of economic performance in Cauvery (68.30%), Tunga (73.30%) and Ghataprabha (78.40%) command areas.As many as 12 personal, socio-economic and psychological characteristics of sugarcane growers viz., age, education, land holding, annual income, mass media participation, extension participation, cropping intensity, risk orientation, scientific orientation, economic motivation, self orientation and extension agency had significant to highly significant relationship with the economic performance level of sugarcane farmers. The contribution of independent variables together explained variation to an extent of 74 per cent in the economic performance level of sugarcane growers as indicated by R~2 value. The level of economic performance of respondents in all the three areas differed significantly as indicated by x~2 test.
