An investigation was undertaken to desing and develop a tractor drawn trencher for digging rectangular trench of size 300 x 300 mm suitable for plantation crops like banana, coconut and oil palm Performance of the developed tractor drawn trencher in terms of cost, time and energy appraisals for trenching in plantion field was carried out. The cost of the trencher was worked out to be Rs. 12000 and operational cost of the trencher with 45 HP tractor was found to be Rs. 262.60/h. The cost, time and energy required for manual trenching were rs. 2.65/m, 0.42 h/m and 0.11 MJ/m run respectively, and for machine trenching the corresponding values were Rs. 0.15 / m, 4.44 x 10~(-4) h/m and 0.0425 MJ/ m run in black clay loam and Rs. 0.15/ m, 4.61 x 10-4 h/mand 0.051 MJ/m run red sandy loam. The cost, time and energy saved by the machine trenching in comparison to manual trenching were 94.34, 99.89 and 61.36 per cent respectively in black clay loam and 94.34, 99.89 and 53.64 per cent respectively in red sandy loam soil.
