Standardization of Softwood Grafting Technique in Jamun under poly mist house conditions

Jamun (Syzygium cumini skeels) is an evergreen tropical tree belongs to Myrtaceae family, native to India, Pakistan and Indonesia. Jamun fruit possesses considerable nutritive value. The seed is also used in various alternative healing systems like Ayurveda , Unani and Chinese medicine for digestive ailments. The leaves and bark are used for controlling blood pressure and gingivitis. Wine and vinegar are also made from the fruit.-It is a high source of vitamin A and vitamin C (Anon., 2006). In many parts of the tropics, quite a few" fruit crop species are commercially propagated by seeds with long juvenile phase without any commercial significance in terms of fruit size, seed size, fruit quality etc. Use of vegetative propagation methods would be the greatest single step which could be taken for the improvement of tropical fruit cultivation. Several attempts were made to propagate underutilized fruit trees by grafting, budding, air layering, cutting and stooling. In spite of development of many improved propagation techniques, the commercial exploitation of such technique has not been achieved yet in underutilized fruit crops.
