Inga dulcis Wild. [(syn. Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth.jy is a minor underutilized fruit plant native to Central and Northern South America. It is introduced and extensively naturalized in the Caribbean, Florida, Guam and Southeast Asia (Anon, 2005). Inga grows well at low and medium altitudes in both wet and dry areas under full sunlight. Although well drained soil is best, it also grows successfully in heavy clay soils. Once planted in the field, the tree does not need any treatment other thanoccasional pruning. Pests and diseases do not seem to cause any serious problems. Inga is often used for land rehabilitation due to hardiness and drought tolerance apart from using as shelter, wind-break and defensive live hedge. It is also often planted as a street tree and for other amenities. The pulp of the fruit, is white or red, very sweet and of a pleasant flavour as human food. Pods contain pulp that is variously sweet and acid, commonly white but also red. The seed and pulp are made into a sweet drink similar to lemonade and also eaten roasted or fresh. In folk medicine, a decoction of its bark can cure frequent bowel movement.The leaves can be applied as plasters for pain and venereal sores. Decoctions of leaves are also used for indigestion and abortifacient (Anon, 2006).
