USE OF SMALL AMOUNT OF LITHIUM FOR BOOSTING GLASS PRODUCTION Part I- Lithium Minerals, availability, and its use in Commercial Glasses

摘要

This review article in two parts deal with the use of small amount of Li2 O in commercial glasses for increasing production and furnace efficiency as well as improving some properties of the glass. In part I of this article the source of lithium, like minerals, lithium containing brines etc. have been discussed. The range of amount of lithium used, and types of glasses have been given. The availability of the minerals and world scenario has been presented. Tables have been given to show advantages gained by use of lithium in practical plant trials. Part II of the paper to be published in the coming issue will discuss the property changes brought about by lithium addition.
