Is functional assessment of mitral regurgitation using transthoracic echocardiography accurate?

Previous studies have shown that trans-esophageal echocardiography (TEE) is superior to transthroracic echocardiography (TTE) when assessing the feasibility of mitral valve repair and predicting patient outcome after surgery. Improvements in the quality and accuracy of TTE imaging, however, mean that its ability to assess mitral regurgitation (MR) needs to be reassessed. OBJECTIVE To find out whether TTE imaging can accurately assess the feasibility of mitral valve repair and predict patient outcome after surgery.
