Two recent studies1'2 have confirmed the benefits of fast-track (enhanced recovery) colonic surgery (Box 1). One study, in a US community hospital system, reports a shorter length of stay (LOS) and reduced costs combined with a stable readmission rate after fast-track surgery. Another study, part of the large laparoscopy and/or fast track multimodal management versus standard care (LAFA) randomized trial, confirms faster gastrointestinal transit recovery for fast-track versus conventional care, with most benefits observed for laparoscopic procedures compared with open colonic resections.
