Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are reported to be involved in tumor growth, apoptosis, angiogenesis, invasion, and development of metastases. These are zinc containing metalloproteases, known for their role in extracellular matrix turnover. This study has evaluated the association of the expression levels of MMP-11 with mammary tumor development in dogs, measured by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. This study reports the expression profile of MMP-11 in canine mammary tumor condition. Mammary tissue samples were collected from healthy canine mammary gland (n = 10) and from tumor subjects (n = 10). The expression of MMP-11 in these tissues was determined by real-time quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT PCR). MMP-11 expression was found to be upregulated (4.323 times) in canine mammary tumor state. The result suggests that malignant behaviour of canine mammary tumor is associated with increased transcription of MMP-11 gene.
