Every year about 500 000 patients acquire health care associated infections in Germany, 10 000 to 15 000 of them die of those infections. Hand hygiene is one of the main measures to prevent health care associated infections.The German hand hygiene campaign "AKTION Saubere Hande" is based on the concept of multimodal interventions aiming at the improvement of hand hygiene compliance. Measurement of compliance is an essential component of the conceptual design. One possibility is the measurement of alcohol based hand rub usage as a surrogate for compliance. Within the "AKTION Saubere Hande" campaign, the Hospital Infection Surveillance System (KISS) developed the "Hand-KISS" module. All hospitals participating in the campaign and all hospitals interested feed their usage data into the system.By December 2008, 447 hospitals registered to the module. By September 2008 usage data covering the year of 2007 of 137 hospitals were available. Analysis of this data comprehends more than 12,5 Million patient days and overall about 259000 litres of alcohol based hand rub usage.
