Effects of sowing method and planting density on growth and root yield of Cynanchum wilfordii Hemsly

A study was carried out in Korea Republic to determine the effect of sowing method (direct sowing or seedling transplanting) at four crop densities (17, 19, 22 and 27 plants/m2) on the growth and root yield of C. wilfordii. The vine diameter, numberof branches, number of branched roots and root length, were higher with seedling transplanting than with direct sowing. The main vine length, number of branches, and number of tillers increased at the high crop densities, but vine diameter, leaf length,leaf width, root length, and root diameter increased at the low crop densities. Fresh root yield was greater with seedling transplanting than with direct sowing. With seedling transplanting, fresh root yield was 53% higher at 27 plants/m2 than at 17 plants/m2. Therefore, transplanting at 27 plants/m2 was the most effective treatment for increasing C. wilfordii root yield.
