Samkwangchal, a new covered waxy barley cultivar, was developed from the cross between barley cv. Daebaegbori, an early maturing and large grain size cultivar, and Suwon 302 with waxy endosperm, in Korea republic. Among the crosses made in 1996, a promising line (YB4298-B-B-5-3-5) that showed high yield and quality characteristics in yield trials at Suwon, Korea Republic, in 2002, was designated as Suwon 394. It performed good in regional yield trials at 5 locations in Korea Republic, from 2003 to 2005, and was released as Samkwangchal. It pertains to the growth habit of IV and has green leaves and stems and compact spikes with long rough awns. Its heading date was April 29 in upland conditions and 22 April in paddy field conditions, which were one and 2 days later than those of the control cultivar Seodunchalbori, respectively. Its maturing date was 1 and 2 June in upland areas and 30 May in paddy fields, which were the same and which were 2 days later than that of Seodunchalbori. The new cultivar, Samkwangchal, had a culm length of 75 cm, which was 10 cm shorter than that of Seodunchalbori, and a spike length of 4.1 cm. It had 662 spikes per m2, 49 grains per spike, a 1000-grain weight of 36.0 g and a test weight of 662 g. Samkwangchal showed weaker winter hardiness, but better resistance to powdery mildew and Barley yellow mosaic virus than Seodunchalbori. It showed higher beta -glucan content, pearling rate and whiteness than those of the control cultivar, but vice versa for protein content. The average yield of the pearled grain in the regional yield trial was 4.60 MT/ha in upland areas and 4.28 MT/ha in paddy fields, which was 12 and 3% higher, respectively, than the control cultivar.
