Kondinin Group engineer Josh Giumelli has skinned his share of knuckles in the workshop to put some serious thought into how he — and you — can avoid the pitfalls of dealing with rusted nuts and bolts. Removing rusted nuts or bolts can turn a 10-minute task into something which takes hours. A snapped bolt in the wrong spot can cause massive headaches, especially if it needs to be drilled out and rethreaded. With most of our farm machinery exposed to the elements, chemicals, heat and dust, it is little wonder some fasteners can prove all but impossible to remove since they were last handled — or manhandled. But a few minutes to take some precautions when installing nuts and bolts can save hours further down the track.
