Future Farm Industries CRC research into new perennial species is unearthing new possibilties for Australian pastures. Leading the way are the new birdsfoot trefoil cultivars which are being dubbed as new tools to help farmers adapt to a drier climate. New pasture varieties will provide greater prennial options for Australian producers, but they also could protect them from the impacts of climate change — all while reducing livestock greenhouse gas emissions to boot. One of the shining lights of theFuture Farm Industries CRC (FFI CRC)-funded research into new perennial options is birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) and according to New South Wales Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) pasture ecologist Graeme Sandral, recent results suggest it is capable of tackling many of the current challenges head on.
