AUDI'S design and style figurehead, the TT, makes a further leap forward in legitimising its sporting and performance 'credentials' with the new gen-three. That's the message MOTOR got during a full day with the car at Audi HQ, Ingolstadt, this month. We didn't drive it, but we did get hands-on with both base and TTS variants and talked at length with the car's development team. It's based on Volkswagen Audi Group's much vaunted MQB platform (Golf, A3), though much of its structure - now an even 50:50 mix of steel and alloy - is TT-specific outside of the floor and firewall areas. It has a lower centre of gravity, longer wheelbase and is 50kg lighter outright than the gen-two TT introduced in 2006. It will be produced in Gyor, Hungary, with an all-aluminium body, while some bits - like parts of the suspension and air-con - are sourced from Audi's parts bin.
