Smooth. Fluent. Compliant. This car moulds like putty in the hands of a focused, committed driver. The sixth-generation Golf GTI is all about control, intuition, approachability. Its turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine delivers only 155kW (up from 147kW), but not many hot hatches are quicker than the VW, especially when the road from A to B is dotted with corners and dips. For a little less than 2000 Euro more, the fresh-faced GTI can be equipped with the smart six-speed dual-clutch transmission which puts up to 280Nm of torque at your fingertips. The other mandatory option is larger tyres. Our test car was fitted with inch-bigger 225/40ZR18 Michelin Pilot Exaltos which dish up a highly entertaining mix of grip, traction and slip-angle over the standard 17-inchers.
