The choice comes beyond the Mittagong turn-off. Just as it always does. I'm heading north, home, again, and there is no reason to abandon the ease of the Hume Highway; no reason not to leave the cruise control on for another hour. The choice, though, is to take the longer way. the backroads via Hilltop and down through The Oaks. But I rarely do. Most of our major road-test adventures seem to end on this highway and, by the time we're going north again, I know all I need to know about the conveyance du jour. But every now and then a car comes along that may be wrong for everything else, but somehow seems the right companion on the longer journey home. And today I'm driving one.
