GOVERNMENT SUPPORT, market perception and the rise of the middle class in emerging markets are the deciding factors for the boom or bust of the construction, agriculture and mining sectors. Compared to the second quarter of 2010,46 percent of dealers reported to Associated Equipment Distributors, Oak Brook, 111., that revenue growth was more than 10 percent compared to the same quarter a year before, says Toby Mack, president and CEO of AED. "Eighteen percent are between one and 10 percent higher, 21 percent reported no change and 15 percent reported a drop," he says. Any company involved in the minerals, mining, energy or agricultural markets is generally the exception to the overall drop, Mack says. "Their businesses are doing nicely and those markets are doing strongly, whereas general construction, infrastructure, residential and commercial are typically weaker."
