Liquid crystals such as nematic liquid crystals andferroelectric smectic liquid crystals are well infiltrated in photoniccrystal, synthetic opal. Dielectric and optical properties of liquidcrystals have been found to exhibit remarkable change uponinfiltration in the opal. Diffraction and transmission of lightthrough opals have been found to change upon infiltration ofliquid crystal in opals and also upon field application. Relaxationof dielectric response in liquid crystals infiltrated in opal shifted tohigher frequency and its temperature dependence has also changed.Electro-optic effect of the opal infiltrated with liquid crystals havebeen also discussed.These results have been discussed in terms of interaction ofliquid crystal molecule in nano-space and the inner surface of thenano-scale void in the photonic crystal, synthetic opal.
