A method for measuring the acoustical attenuation coefficient of liquids in the frequency range 12.5-150 kHz is described. Details of the easy-to-obtain spherical resonator cells with comparatively small sample volume (≤1 l) are shown and a favourable measuring procedure is presented. Particular attention is paid to the resonator transfer function, including higher order vibration modes. Possible sources of error are discussed and a procedure for an adequate evaluation of data is given. The usability of the method is illustrated by reference measurements on aqueous solutions of manganese sulphate and of the monosaccharide D-fructose.
