The IEC noise prediction standard 534-8-3 has much to commend it. It has achieved the difficult task of producing reasonably accurate answers to a most complex problem entirely by theoretical means. It does not require any testing or theapplication of empirical data, although in arriving at some of the equations, purely theoretical relationships have been slightly modified, such adjustments having been based on well proven data.Whatever its advantages or disadvantages, the IEC standard provides a 'bench mark' for the industry which should find acceptance by manufacturers and users. There may be some aspects of it that can be improved and these will be examined as they arise byIEC committee SC65B/WG9 which is presently investigating the effects of high outlet velocities and considering some improvements to the transmission loss section. The standard will never be static - it will always be under review in the light of thelatest technology.
