Hydromatic Pump (HP) Division of Pentair Pump Group (Ashland, OH) makes sump pumps, submersible non-clog pumps, and primer pumps, many for rugged wastewater treatment installations. The pumps are manufactured by 300 employees in a 250,000 sq.-ft. facility with machining centers, manual and CNC lathes, mills, and chuckers. Pump motor housings, volute cases, impellers, and seal and bearing housings are machined using rotating tools for drilling, boring, threading, endmilling, and face milling. Class 25 or 30 gray iron is used in making 95% of the parts (the remainder are made from stainless steel), and part tolerances are ±0.01" on dimension and 32μ on finish. Like every other manufacturer, Hydromatic Pump is sensitive to time. HP's manufacturing engineer Bill Slusser explains that the company was looking for ways to increase the productivity of all its rotating machines. especially the milling and drilling operations.
