Synergis Technologies (Grand Rapids, MI) learned this lesson while producing stamping dies for major automakers and their suppliers. The shop routinely uses a Pratt & Whitney VMC to mill out cavities in flame-cut steel die blanks. When using traditional end mills, making shallow, radial cuts, it used to take Synergis up to two shifts to rough-cut eight cavities in a stamping die block. By adding a Sandvik Coromant plunge cutter, plunging a full 12" depth, the same shop can now turn out nearly nine die blocks in the same time. In fact, once machine paths had been reprogrammed, the switch to Sandvik slashed total cavity machining costs per die block by 90%.
