Reported adverse reactions to health products increase 35% last year: Health Canada

The number of adverse reactions (ARs) to drugs and other health products reported to Health Canada spiked by 35% in 2009 over the previous year.Health Canada released the 2009 data in a recent issue of the Canadian Adverse Reaction Newsletter. The information on suspected ARs to various health products - phar-maceuticals, biotechnology products, natural health products and others - is collected under the Canada Vigilance Program. The federal department received 27,496 domestic AR reports in 2009, close to 75% of them considered serious - defined by the Food and Drugs Act as leading to hospi-talization, significant disability, congenital malformation, life-threatening conditions or death.
