摘要

Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Bayev,born January 10,1904,was destined to play a major role in the history of biology in Russia.His scientific career was inseparable from the Institute of Molecular Biology,where between 1959 and 1994 he had advanced from a Candidate of Sciences and senior researcher to an academician,secretary of the Department of Biochemistry,Biophysics and Chemistry of Physiologically Active Compounds,and member of the Presidium of the USSR Academy of Sciences.Bayev pioneered DNA and RNA sequencing in the Soviet Union;these efforts,including the sequencing of valine tRNAs and yeast ribosomal RNAs,were widely acknowledged both in this country and abroad.He led the team that developed the method of assembly of"dissected molecules"that allowed him to obtain important information on tRNA functions.Specialists of Bayev's laboratory were at the forefront of recombinant DNA technology in the Soviet Union and later successfully applied their experience to the fledging field of biotechnology,successfully producing,among other projects,the first recombinant human growth hormone.
