Shell seeks to sell off most polymer businesses

Squeezed by the lowest oil prices in 12 years, Royal Dutch/Shell Group has announced a raft of restructuring measures that include a plan to sell half its interest in polypropylene producer Montell. This, plus other measures, will lead to a 40% reduction in Shell's chemicals businesses. Other polymer businesses Shell hopes to find buyers or joint venture partners for are PET, elastomers (Kraton D SBS and Kraton G SEBS, as well as butadiene and styrene-butadiene rubbers), polystyrene, polyurethane foams, polyketones (Carilon), and epoxies. Only Shell's polyethylene activities, already in the Elenac joint venture with BASF, will be kept.
