GE expands thinwall frontier in injection [molding]

Thinwall process technology, which has gained ground in electronics, is being actively pursued in consumer, lawn and garden, and automotive applications. Engineering resins giant GE Plastics is attempting to regain market share from volume resins with high-value, low-cost systems. Based in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA, GE says the price gap between commodities and engineering resins can be dramatically cut because up to 40% less material may be needed, while cycle times can be shortened as much as 50%. PC and PC/ABS grades, mainstays in traditional thinwall parts, are being targeted to replace PP, HIPS, and PVC. GE's initial success was with a steam iron at Black & Decker. PC/ABS replaced talc-filled PP for a 33% reduction in walls.
